Licenses or Certifications:

Current Texas Motor Vehicle Operator License appropriate for vehicle(s) operated or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.

Notes to Applicants

The Signage Technician will work in the Signs Division of Austin Transportation Department. This position will fabricate, install, and maintain traffic and street signs.

The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in using computers to enter job completion information and power tools such as a gas powered auger to assemble and install signs and drive a sign post sleeve into the ground. Must have excellent customer service experience to discuss job with citizens.

This position requires overtime and call back as needed and working at least six (6) hours in all types of inclement weather, hot, cold, or rainy.

Must have Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within (90) days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to learn signs operations such as installation or maintenance of City traffic signs.

Understanding of MUTCD and its application to traffic signs.

Experience in installation or maintenance of traffic signs.

Knowledge of safety procedures, right of way flagging and traffic control safety.

Prefer IMSA certified or ability to gain IMSA certification.

Must be able to stand, walk the eight hours, manual dexterity and mobility to perform the duties of the position.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Must be able to work outdoors in the heat and inclement weather to perform duties of the position.

Strong computer skills in word, Excel, Outlook, and database management such as Maximo or similar for data entry of each job completed.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Utilizes various software to design and create departmental street signs, terminal signs, advertising/promotional signs, and traffic and directional signs.
2. Repairs and maintains departmental street signs, terminal signs, advertising/promotional signs, and traffic and directional signs.
3. Researches proper sign specifications to ensure adherence to all traffic and safety regulations.
4. Communicates with internal and external customers for exact specifications and signage logistics.
5. Resolves signage related complaints/issues.
6. Operates equipment to create, transport, and install signs, i.e., forklifts, bucket trucks, hand tools, plotter, scissor lifts, and auger drills.
7. Reviews, analyzes, and completes work orders.
8. Assists departmental divisions in regards to designing and creating signs, scoreboards, etc.
9. Performs administrative duties such as documenting requests and other information, copying and faxing documents, corresponding via email and telephone, etc.
