Notes to Applicants

Under supervision, perform graphic design duties that contribute to both the promotion and dissemination of information relating to Austin Energy or City-wide initiatives or programs. These duties may contribute to any or all of the following areas: Marketing, public relations, media relations, and publication of documents for internal and external education and communication. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

• Ability to adhere to and apply brand guidelines in all creative work
• Ability to collaborate with fellow designers and to give and receive constructive criticism in a positive manner
• Ability to adopt new graphic design software and technologies
• Ability to work simultaneously on 5+ projects based on current workload
• Ability to create visual aspects of marketing materials, websites and other media, including infographics
• Willing to pull together disparate elements of a design created by another professional, such as the icons, photographs and other components necessary for a print or digital design
• Ability to create executive presentations in PowerPoint and/or Prezi

This position must travel between various locations as part of the regular job duties, and individual may be required to drive own personal vehicle or City vehicle. Successful candidate must be in possession of a Texas driver’s license as authorized by the Texas Transportation Code. A driving record verification will be conducted. Applicants for positions for which City driving is an essential function must meet the standards of the program: age 18 or older, current applicable driver’s license, proof of insurability, and no more than six (6) points assessed on Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) based on Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driver Record Report. Preferred Qualifications

Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience using Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and other graphic design tools

Strong knowledge of offset and digital printing technologies; the ability to prepare design files for print; experience working with printers to determine best method of printing to meet stakeholder needs and align to budgets; experience securing quotes

Knowledge of video editing software such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut

Knowledge and experience with UI/UX design

Familiarity with accessibility compliance guidelines for digital media (web, email, PDFs)

Familiarity with relevant Web technologies, to include but not limited to HTML, CSS, Web content management systems, MailChimp and/or similar related software

PC and Mac platform savvy; ability to use Microsoft Office suite including Microsoft Outlook

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Designs develops, and produces and creates illustrations, logos and art work for a wide variety of marketing materials for meetings, presentations, trade shows, and other events.

  2. Perform photography work (graphic design, events, etc.) for publication in newsletters or inclusion in reports.

  3. Monitors all stages of production to complete projects (design the work and incorporate others’ ideas). Coordinates all aspects of producing marketing materials.

  4. Advises and consults with vendors (photo labs, photographers, printers, etc.). Produces bid specifications, documentation, and contracts for vendors.

  5. Assists in the planning and development of advertising/promotional campaigns/strategies.

  6. Designs and edits newsletters for internal and external use.

  7. Develops and updates Intranet and Internet web sites. Use computerized graphic software to produce final product.

  8. Plans and works on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations.

  9. May have primary responsibility for larger individual projects or act as an art director for client programs. May act as a liaison on behalf of these programs.

  10. Assists with the development of long range strategic marketing plans.
