The Parking Meter Technician will work in the Austin Transportation department, Parking Enterprise Division. The position will be responsible for ensuring the continuous operation of the on-street metered parking systems, including performing diagnostic evaluations, repair and maintenance of solar electronic single space meters and solar electronic pay stations.

Pay Range

$15.12 – $18.46


Initial Training- Monday – Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Regular Full Time Position: Normal Hours – Tuesday – Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Temporary Positions: Sunday – Saturday from 3:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. or 5:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. subject to change
Hours may change depending on business needs.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Responds to calls and alarms regarding parking equipment breakdowns and malfunctions; troubleshoots parking meter system malfunctions and failures; restarts or replaces system components, micro-switches, EPROM’s, relays and other parts or entire single meters as needed per work orders (Customer Service Requests). 
2. Assembles, prepares and installs solar electronic multi-space pay stations and single space meters and housings. Initiates and tests equipment to ensure proper installations are safe and equipment operates properly.  Removes old or existing meter poles and housings.  Installs parking permit notifications; removes permitting signs and covers upon expiration of permit.
3. Performs preventative maintenance on solar electronic single space meters and solar electronic pay stations.  Disassembles, cleans, calibrates, and reassembles electronic components, ensuring proper programming and maintaining wireless communications link.  Inspects and tests equipment and systems using diagnostic and analytical tools and tests.
4. Charges and replaces as needed, batteries and internal and external electronic components.
5. Collects, transports, and deposits on-street parking meter revenue.  Completes all required paperwork ensuring compliance with established processes and procedures, and obtains signature of acceptance from receiving entity.
6. Discusses and resolves system problems with departmental staff, assists Austin Transportation Department staff with wireless communications diagnostics; ensures repairs are completed in accordance with established safety procedures, ensures proper operation and resolution of the problem.
7. Reviews the work of suppliers, contractors and others to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
8. Maintains detailed written and electronic records, including activity, credit card transaction, preventative maintenance, and part inventory logs.
9. Performs queries and produces reports from multiple databases.  Analyzes and interprets data to determine individual meter or meter system performance.  Downloads data terminals to database as needed.
10. Assists on-street customers in performing transactions and understanding parking regulations.
11. Issues parking citations using a hand held ticketing device

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Knowledge of the construction and functioning of solar electronic parking meters and solar electronic pay stations.
Skill in diagnosing and repairing malfunctioning solar electronic parking meters and solar electronic pay stations.
Skill in using tools required (ohm meter, flash drive programmers and all other related small tools such as screwdrivers, ratchet drivers and assorted pliers) to diagnose and repair solar electronic parking meters and solar electronic pay stations or small mechanical devices.
Skill in using tools required (jack hammer drill, grinder, and other hand held power tools) as needed in the field construction of both, solar electronic single space meters, solar electronic pay stations or small mechanical devices and their related signage.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
