Notes to Applicants

The Danny G. McBeth Recreation Center and Annex is located in Zilker Park. Activities are offered year round for children and adults with disabilities through our after school explorers, spring break and summer day camps, and recreational adult day program.

The purpose of this position is to plan and implement out-of-school time programs, Adult programs and adaptive sports for youth, teens and adults with disabilities. Other relevant duties include, but not limited to:

• Planning and implementing programs for youth, teens and adults with disabilities.
• Coaching adaptive sport activities (i.e. Special Olympics, wheelchair sports, modified swimming, etc.).
• Completing daily therapeutic documentation for youth and adult programs.
• Develop marketing materials for out-of-school time programs, special events and adaptive sports.

Physical Requirements:

• Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
• Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.
• Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces.

Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL):

• If selected as the top candidate, a Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within three (3) months of hire dated will be required.
• Top candidate will be required to show proof of a valid Driver’s License, Proof of Vehicle Insurance, and a TX Driving Record (full history).
• Top Candidate must comply with the Department of Transportation Federal Regulations; the City of Austin Drug Policy; and with the City of Austin Safe Driver Policy.

Driver’s License and other Certifications:

• If selected as a top candidate, a Texas Class C Driver’s License or have the ability to acquire one by the date of hire will be required.
• Must have CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within thirty (30) days of hire date.

Pay Range

$14.42 – $17.58 per hour


Variable – 40 hrs. per week schedule

• 9am – 6pm, Monday through Friday.

• May be required to work during special events, some evenings and weekends for programming needs.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education and Certifications in the following :

  • Prefer major course work and/or Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field.
  • Current Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

Preferred Experience in the following :

  • One (1) or more years’ inclusion, behavior or therapeutic recreation experience.
  • Experience working specifically with Youth (5-12 yrs. of age), Teens (13-18 yrs. of age) and with Adults with disabilities in a professional recreational setting.
  • Experience implementing recreational educational programming for children and adults with disabilities.
  • Experience coaching adaptive sport activities (i.e. Special Olympics, wheelchair sports, modified swimming, etc.).
  • Experience writing daily client progress notes.
  • Experience working with populations and communities of diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Texas Class “C” Driver License.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

2. Plans course content and method of presentation or delivery.
3. Selects and assembles materials, equipment, and other instructional aids.
4. Schedules, registers, and conducts classes and workshops..
6. Adapts workshops and classes to student age, physical ability, and interests..
8. Provides individual coaching.
9. Ensures safe and proper use of equipment and materials.
10. Selects, stores, and inventory equipment and supplies
11. Maintains student records and provides data to program personnel
