Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have experience attending two Austin Nature & Science Center camps over two summers as a Counselor in Training (CIT)
  • Be 16 years of age
  • Be willing and able to assist counselors with children ages 4-12
  • Junior Counselors are required to be certified in First Aid, CPR and Basic Water Rescue prior to the first day of work. Each of these certification trainings will be provided in late May or early June for ANSC summer staff. Junior Counselors unable to attend the certification trainings offered by ANSC are responsible for obtaining and paying for training through the American Red Cross.

Notes to Applicants

This position will work approximately 1 month for 40 hours a week.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to work with participants adapting to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, hiking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, swimming, stretching and reaching in rugged terrain.
  • Tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather and/or inclement conditions, and in confined spaces.

Pay Range

$10.00 per hour

  • 40 hours per week
  • Monday through Friday.
  • Hours may vary between 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. With assistance safely facilitate and actively supervise participants at all times while engaging in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
  2. Assist in teaching program activities to accommodate various ages, abilities and interests.
  3. Regular attendance is mandatory for this position.
  4. Serve as a role-model, exercising appropriate decision-making and boundary setting.
  5. Communicate clearly and professionally with participants, parents, co-workers and supervisor.
  6. Work cooperatively with ANSC staff.
  7. Other duties as assigned.
