Minimum Qualifications

This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending on qualifications:

Graduate Engineer A:
Salary: $28.95 – $37.50/hour

    Minimum Qualifications:
      Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job.

Graduate Engineer B:
Salary: $30.65 – $39.74/hour

    Minimum Qualifications:
      Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate engineering discipline with at least two (2) years of engineering experience.
    Licenses and Certifications Required:
      Texas: Engineer – In Training Certification.

Engineer A:

Hourly Pay Rate: $32.47 – $42.10

    Minimum Qualifications:
      Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years engineering experience acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
    Licenses and Certifications Required:
      Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas

Engineer B:

Hourly Pay Rate: $34.40 – $44.60

    Minimum Qualifications:
      Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus six (6) years experience in engineering, acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
    Licenses and Certifications Required:
      Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas

The Austin Transportation Department’s Active Transportation and Street Design Division has an opening for full-time Street Designer position (Graduate Engineer or Engineer) to develop projects that improve mobility and safety for bicycling, walking, safe routes to schools, and transit priority projects.

This position will assist with the implementation of the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan through supporting the implementation of multi-modal mobility and safety projects. The Division focuses on the planning, design and implementation of bicycle, pedestrian, safe routes to school, and transit priority projects as well as education and encouragement programs that promote walking and bicycling. This position will develop, publicly vet, scope, and support the installation multi-modal mobility and safety projects. This position will be part of a ten-person team to coordinate delivery for a large volume of projects in a deadline-driven environment. A significant portion of projects will be funded by the 2016 Mobility Bond. The projects will be to create on-street facilities (protected and conventional bicycle lanes, median refuge islands, pedestrian friendly geometry, transit queue jumps, rain gardens, etc.) with a focus on innovative design in a largely in retrofit environment.

The Graduate Engineer A or B or Engineer A or B will perform the following specific duties for a diverse array of projects:

  • Feasibility studies
  • Data collection and field work
  • Design
  • Peer review; plan review
  • Managing public processes
  • Project implementation oversight
  • Review layout quality in the field

Monday – Friday, flexible, 40 hours per week. Will include weekends and evening work on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring the following preferred qualifications:

  • Experience and interest in the design and/or implementation of bicycle, pedestrian, safe routes to school, and transit priority and more generally, multimodal transportation infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with the state of the practice including the NACTO Urban Street Design Guide, Urban Bikeway Design Guide, Transit Street Design Guide; the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities and Guide for the Planning, Design, and Operation of Pedestrian Facilities; and relevant City / Capital Metro planning documents.
  • Familiar in using TxMUTCD
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems, specifically ArcMap
  • Strong project/program coordination and management skills
  • Excellent communication, team working and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills written and verbal, ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent computer skills in Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; etc.
  • Experience with Data Management, specifically with Microsoft Access Databases
