Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School diploma/GED, and six (6) months related experience.
  • Must have current American Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED, or the ability to obtain certifications within 30 days of hire. Training and Certifications are offered by Parks and Recreation.

Pay Range

$14.50 per hour

Hours
  • Variable – up to 30 hours per week
  • Programming hours vary at each worksite
  • Mondays through Fridays between 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (includes 1 hour break)

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer experience leading and/or instructing one or more of the following:

  • Recreational Games and Activities (outdoors)
  • Sports/Athletics Programs
  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Team Building
  • Therapeutic Recreation/Inclusion/Special Education

Other preferred experience:

  • Experience in the areas of behavior management, inclusion, and/or adaptive recreation.
  • Experience communicating information clearly and concisely in person, by phone, email, etc. while exercising tact, patience, and discretion in a professional demeanor.
  • Experience maintaining and establishing working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public.
  • Excellent writing/composition skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to multi-task.
  • Experience supervising and leading others.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to work with participants while adapting to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, hiking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, stretching, and reaching in rugged terrain.
  • Tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement.
  • Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions, and in confined spaces.

  • Safely facilitate and actively supervise participants at all times while engaging in a variety of activities.
  • Develop, modify and teach program activities to accommodate various ages, abilities and interests.
  • Regular attendance is essential for this position.
  • Attend all sessions of scheduled staff training.
  • Serve as a role-model, exercising appropriate decision-making boundary setting.
  • Utilize effective behavior management skills, including enforcing policies fairly, consistently, kindly and firmly.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with, participants, parents, co-workers and supervisor.
  • Work cooperatively with co-counselors and other staff.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Complete reports and forms and assist with maintaining records in accordance with COA and PARD policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Establish a professional rapport with participants which fosters trust, honesty, and a feeling of safety.
