Position provides advanced focus on architecting, integrating, optimizing, implementing, configuring, documenting, managing, administering, troubleshooting, maintaining and monitoring highly complex, highly reliable systems, under minimal supervision, using expert skills and current knowledge of information system technologies while being able to contribute to daily operations, maintenance and installations to support Department-based critical systems.

This position communicates and collaborates with both IT employees and customers. This position performs on-call duties to support a 24/7 Real-Time Operations center. This position requires the ability to drive to multiple locations to perform essential job duties.

The primary duties of the position include:

  • Implement, configure, manage, administer, maintain and monitor software and hardware for all systems affecting Austin Energy. AIX & Linux administration
  • Research, test, evaluate, and make recommendations for new software and hardware technology
  • Troubleshoot advanced systems/topologies/networks/storage and support critical customers in a utility environment.

Pay Range

$32.47 – $42.10


Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Additional work hours may be required to support the 24-hour Utility operations which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, inclement weather and emergency closures.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with well managed practices for distributed AIX & Linux systems, centralized authentication and syslog management experience
  • Experience installing and managing Splunk Enterprise
  • Experience dealing with a wide array of Technology vendors and grasping complex newly evolving technologies
  • Experience understanding IT integrated converged infrastructure technologies
  • Experience understanding,installing and managing vMotion, Live Partition Mobility and/or HyperConverged Infrastructure
  • Communication and collaboration with both IT employees and customers
  • NERC Standards knowledge
  • VMWare environment management
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Performs advanced focused architecting, optimizing, implementing, configuring, managing, administering, troubleshooting, maintaining and monitoring one or more of the following: infrastructure software, hardware, systems/applications, middleware, servers/storage, and IP-based telecommunications

2. Establishes and implements IT policies, governance, standards, and security

3. Makes independent decisions for procurement of technical solutions in their focus area

4. Creates, documents, publishes, and/or performs maintenance procedures and ensures all installations are in accordance with COA’s specifications and IT standards/governance

5. Assists in planning, designing, procuring and delivering software and hardware purchases. 

6. Ensures appropriate product specifications 

7. Provides costs analysis 

8. Installs new specific software releases and/or upgrades including researching, testing and implementing new technology

9. Participates in disaster recovery planning and testing, including fault tolerance and detailed disaster recovery plan maintenance

10. Communicates and interfaces with members of the IT, vendor and user communities
