Minimum Qualifications

Archivist I
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration. A Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.

Archivist II
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration, plus two (2) years professional experience working in an archives, library, museum, or other cultural heritage institution. A Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.

Notes to Applicants

Under limited direction, this position processes archival collections provides reference service to the public and provides public programming.
1. Identifies, acquires, organizes, and processes collections related to Asian American heritage in Austin/Travis County.
2.Develops and implements pubic programs and events related to Asian American history in Austin/Travis County.
3. Provides public liaison activities including lectures, media appearances and interviews related to Asian American history in Austin/Travis County.
4.Collaborates with other organizations to plan and implement programs related to Austin/Travis County.
5. Leads or assists in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation related to Asian Americans in Austin/Travis County.
6. Collects oral histories documenting Asian American history in Austin/Travis County.
7. Plans, coordinates and supervises volunteer projects.
8. Answers reference questions in person, over the phone an via email.

Pay Range

Archivist I: $19-36 – $24.59
Archivist II: $21.31-$27.06

Hours

Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm; some evenings and, at minimum, one weekend per month.
Schedule may vary based on needs of organization.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience processing historical/archival collections and finding aids.
2. Experience encoding archival finding aids.
3. Experience creating, planning and implementing community events targeted at the Asian American Community.
4. Experience answering archival/historically-related reference questions from the public.
6. Publication credits.
7. Coursework in Asian American Studies.
8. Certified Archivist.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Provides archival reference and research services
2. Organizes, processes and conserves archival and/or library collections
3. Compiles and creates finding aids and reference guides by organizing and describing records so that information is accessible
4. Assists public in using collections by explaining available resources and methods for locating information
5. Assists with curating and appraisals to determine function, authenticity and evidentiary value
6. Conducts meetings, training and public programs
7. Provides tours of the Austin History Center to public and staff
8. Assists in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation
9. Collects, maintains and reports statistics

Knowledge of archival standards, issues, practices, and trends.
Knowledge of conservation issues, practices, and trends.
Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
Knowledge of records management issues and practices.
Knowledge of digital imaging issues and trends, especially in regards to archival practice.
Skill in using standards for archival description, cataloging, and networked resource sharing for archival objects and descriptions.
Skill in oral and written communication including presentation.
Skill in organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation.
Skill in using computers, related software and desktop applications.
Skill in prioritizing work assignments.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with employees and the public.
