The City of Austin, (pop. 900,000) tops numerous national lists for business, entertainment and quality of life. One of the country’s most popular, high profile “green” and culturally dynamic cities, Austin has again taken the lead with its recent construction of a $125 million new Central Library. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2017, this “Library of the Future” will be the crown jewel in an award winning system of 20 branches that meet the needs of a highly diverse community. The next Director of Libraries will lead a dedicated, resourceful and engaged workforce of 416 employees who interact with more than 3.5 million customers each year. The Director of Libraries will be expected to:

  • Be a creative, strategic visionary with strong operational experience in library management and attention to both the central library and the branch library system.
  • Demonstrate a collaborative, team oriented leadership style, embracing employee participation at all levels of the organization and throughout the Austin Library System.
  • Actively seek out community participation and engagement with an openness to new ideas, the development of community partnerships and a strong commitment to continuous improvement and best practices.
  • Be committed to cost effective service delivery and experience in sharing services with other city departments and units of government with the overall goal of providing the best possible service to the Austin community.

Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Library Science or related field and a minimum of eight years’ experience in library management including four years of supervisory experience, ideally in a large, complex urban library system. Starting salary: $166,000 – $175,000 with excellent fringe benefits/pension/relocation package.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1.Strategic and business planning, ensuring consistency with principles of a Library of the Future.
2.Development and implementation of short and long term goals and objectives.
3.Budget preparation and administration.
4.Represent the Library before City Council and in other public forums.
5.Review and approve all Library policies and procedures.
6.Communicate with the media, community groups, Friends organizations, and the public to gather input and share information regarding the Library.
7. Direct all Library services and operations.
8. Periodically prepare reports describing the status of Library operations.
9. Review plans and procedures for acquisition of both hardcopy and digital materials.
10. Collaborate with other City departments to identify efficiencies, address redundancies, and work more effectively.

Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science.
Knowledge of management and personnel principles and practices.

Skill in establishing and maintaining working relationships with other City employees and the general public.
