Minimum Qualifications

This position will be filled by one of the following depending on qualifications:

Engineer C

Salary: $36.10 – $50.09

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major
coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus eight (8)
years engineering experience acquired either before and/or after licensing
as a professional engineer.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas

OR

Engineer B

Salary: $34.40 – $46.80

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus six (6) years experience in engineering, acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas

Notes to Applicants

Engineer B or C will reside in the Austin Transportation Department, Traffic Engineering Division. Positions are responsible for providing the safest and most efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable transportation network for all users. Positions are responsible for providing leadership and guidance to technical staff, reviewing plans, conducting engineering studies, and corresponding with the public and elected officials.

- Manages, coordinates, implements, and/or monitors projects/programs including the review of plans and development proposals for impacts related to project/program.

- Investigates and resolves complaints from the public through customer service requests and citizen assistance forms.

- Interacts with internal and external customers to assess needs by responding to inquiries from the public and other departments about the process, requirements, and procedures of the development process.

- Coordinates and cooperates with other agencies, departments, divisions and private utilities involved in or affected by project(s).

- Attends meetings and conducts presentations to City Council, Board, commission, and other related agencies.

- Develops and evaluates a variety projects/programs/ and/or plans. Develops long and short-term planning/strategies for programs.

- May provide technical direction, advice to staff.

- Current challenges include responding to the community and City leadership requests for various transportation improvements and changes. Safe, efficient and innovative traffic operations continue to be a top priority for the community and the City.

Out of state PE’s must obtain a Texas PE.

Preferred Qualifications

PE is required; out of state candidates must obtain Texas PE within ~6 months.

Prepare and/or review engineering drawings and feasibility reports, conduct analysis, prepare final plans, and approve, process, and seal plans/specifications/construction documents.

Excellent oral and written communication skills to deliver presentations to public, city council, or customers, and represent the city at public meetings with neighborhood groups, Commissions, Boards or agencies;

Experience in using MUTCD, TxMUTCD, AASHTO, and other transportation engineering guidelines to respond to citizen traffic safety concerns and develop appropriate solutions.

Experience in planning and implementing traffic operational improvements.

Experience with City of Austin’s OR other City Criteria Manuals, NACTO’s Urban Street Design Guide, and CNU’s Designing Walkable Urban Thoroughfares

Experience in developing signing and marking plans, traffic signal/pedestrian hybrid beacon studies, speed limit studies, and school zone studies

Excellent written and oral communication skills.
