Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old. Must have 3 seasons (9 months) of teaching swim lessons, OR American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification and 3 seasons (9 months) of lifeguarding experience.

Notes to Applicants

This position will be hired to work in the Parks and Recreation Aquatic Division as a Seasonal Supervisor and will be responsible for supervising temporary aquatic staff at public pools across the city. This position is a salary (exempt) position and is expected to work 40+ hours per week as needed.

Salary: Supervisor I – $15.25; Supervisor II – $16.50 depending on the certifications held upon hire.

Driving Record and other Certification:

Texas Class C Driver’s License or have the ability to acquire one by the date of hire will be required. Must provide a copy of driving record and proof of insurance upon hire. Reliable transportation is required.

Must take and pass the Parks and Recreation Department Lifeguard City Skills Test before hire.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Will be responsible for all operational aspects of the aquatics program, including safety and pool maintenance.
  2. Will schedule district staff; supervise head lifeguards, cashiers, and lifeguards while on duty.
  3. Will hold biweekly In-Service training
  4. Oversees and is responsible for light book keeping duties.
  5. Follows and enforces all pool policies and rules at all times
  6. Communicates with both public and staff effectively.
  7. Organizes and conducts aquatics summer program activities.
  8. Plans, organizes and leads recreational program activities.
  9. Maintains, inventories and cares for City property and equipment.
  10. Keeps manager informed of materials and supplies necessary to conduct programs.
  11. Cleans program areas after completion of activities and at end of work day.
  12. Demonstrates cooperative behavior with team, supervisors and the public.
  13. Leads, teaches, demonstrates and officiates activities for a variety of age groups.
  14. Monitors and records compliance with safety and department guidelines and rules.
  15. Maintains attendance, activity, supply and equipment records.
  16. Develops lesson or activity plans and program evaluations.
  17. Assists in the use of equipment and supplies.
  18. Communicates with a wide range of people.
  19. Provides information and directions.
  20. Encourages and guides participants.
  21. Sets up equipment for scheduled activities/events.
  22. May give direction to program volunteers on specific activities or projects.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Ability to acquire First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification prior to the completion of the probationary period.
  • Ability to plan, organize, motivate, lead, and promote a variety of recreational activities for different age groups with diverse interests and varying skill levels.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and rapport with employees, volunteers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Ability to handle requests, inquiries, and complaints in a cooperative and constructive manner.
  • Ability to work outdoors and under a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to work irregular hours.
  • Ability to frequently walk and sit when leading various recreational activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
