Notes to Applicants

The Environmental Educator is a temporary, part-time staff position scheduled to work between 20 to 40 hrs per week. Duties include:

  • Prepare and facilitate lessons and activities for participant’s ages 4 years to adult.
  • Provide instructions on programs including school field trips, home schools, after school programs, preschool programs, public camps, events, and adventure activities.

Must have CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within thirty (30) days of hire date.

Pay Range



Variable–Part Time

Mon. – Sun., 8:30am – 6:30pm.

May be required to work during special events outside the normal hours for programming needs.

Evenings, weekends, & holidays may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience and Education in the following:

  • College credit hours from an accredited college or university with a major in Natural Sciences, Education, Parks and Recreation, or related field.
  • Experience working with elementary school age to teens (5 through 14 yrs of age), including developing, implementing and monitoring outdoor nature programming; adventure programming; and/or environmental and science education lessons.
  • Experience with nature programs, including handling of native wildlife during presentations.
  • Experience in the theory and practice of environmental and science programs for youth.
  • Experience in the developing, planning and in the implementation of education curriculum content.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in one or more of these content area; astronomy, environmental and conservation sciences, botany, geology, zoology, field biology, chemistry, and physics. Or: Canoeing, Lifeguarding, Caving, Rock Climbing, Archery, Teambuilding, or Overnight camping with Children.

Other Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with diverse populations and communities, including interacting with individuals of diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Experience communicating information clearly and concisely in person, by phone, email, etc., while exercising tact, patience and discretion in a professional demeanor.
  • Experience maintaining and establishing working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.
  • Excellent writing/composition skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to multitask, are preferred.

  • Must have current American Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED within 30 days of hire.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participants needs and safety issues; and adapt to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, hiking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, swimming, stretching and reaching in rugged terrain.
  • Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1.Lead a group of individuals who may be employees, contractors, and/or volunteers to accomplish assigned programs, activities, and events.
2.Plan and instruct programs, activities and events.
3.Modify classes/workshops to accommodate individuals with a variety of disabilities.
4.Instruct program and special events.
5.Prepare and instruct program and events.
6.Communicate clearly and professionally with, participants, parents, co-workers and supervisor.
7.Work cooperatively with co-counselors and other staff.
8.Provide quality customer service.
9.Complete reports and forms and assist with maintaining records in accordance with COA and PARD policies.
10.Other duties as assigned
