This position will be filled at one of the following based on qualifications:
Water Safety Instructor I ($14.25 per hour):
16 yrs of age or older, plus the following American Red Cross Certifications:
- First Aid
- Water Safety Instructor
Water Safety Instructor II ($14.50 per hour):
17 yrs of age or older, plus one (1) season of teaching and the following American Red Cross Certifications:
- First Aid
- Water Safety Instructor

CERTIFICATIONS in the following:
• Applicants must take and pass Certification Training offered by the Parks and Recreation Department. Certifications include American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, Water Safety Instructor R-09. Training information may be obtained during initial interview.
• Must take and pass the Parks and Recreation Department City Skills Test before hire.
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANTS:
Applicants MUST report to the City of Austin Aquatic Office (2818 San Gabriel Dr, Austin, 78705) between the hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday within seven days of submitting your online application.
• All 17 year olds require parent signatures at the time of interview.
• Applicants will be interviewed. If the applicant is offered a conditional job offer based on meeting training requirements, he/she will be required to show proof of citizenship. • Applicants must bring Social Security Card to be used for payroll verification.

IF HIRED BY THE CITY OF AUSTIN PARKS AND RECREATION AQUATICS DIVISION AS A SEASONAL EMPLOYEE, I UNDERSTAND THAT I MUST ADHERE TO AND WILL BE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FOLLOWING:
- Attend mandatory Orientation.
- Attend all area specific mandatory paid in-service meetings.
- Report to work on time for every shift assigned.
- Remain free from being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
- Wear staff uniform only while on duty.
- Work weekends, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
- Be willing to substitute for others.
- Perform general cleaning and maintenance duties while at work.

Prefer Experience in the following:
• Experience in teaching.
• Team player with excellent customer service skills and schedule flexibility.
Other preferred experience:
• Experience working with diverse populations and communities, including public speaking and interacting with individuals of diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
• Experience communicating information clearly and concisely in person, by phone, email, etc., while exercising tact, patience and discretion in a professional demeanor.
• Experience in coordinating information requests and forwarding to correct contact for responses.
• Experience maintaining and establishing working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.
• Excellent writing/composition skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to multitask is preferred.
|Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Instructs various levels of classes, pre-school through Community Water Safety.
- If qualified, may work as a Lifeguard or a Head Lifeguard.
- Must be able to verbally communicate with public and staff effectively.
- Assists in organizing and conducting recreation activities.
- Plans, organizes and leads program activities.
- Maintains, inventories and cares for City property and equipment.
- Keeps supervisor informed of materials and supplies necessary to conduct programs.
- Cleans program areas after completion of activities and at end of work day.
- Demonstrates cooperative behavior with team, supervisors and the public.
- Leads, teaches, demonstrates and officiates recreational activities for a variety of age groups.
- Monitors and records compliance with safety and department guidelines and rules. Maintains attendance, activity, supply and equipment records.
- Assists in development of lesson or activity plans and program evaluations.
- Assists in the use of equipment and supplies.
- Communicates with a wide range of people
- Provides information and directions.
- Encourages and guides participants.
- Sets up equipment for scheduled recreational activities/events.
- May include cashiering duties.
- May give direction to program volunteers on specific activities or projects

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Knowledge of general safety practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of First Aid.
- Basic knowledge of personal computer operation.
- Ability to learn how to properly use and care for equipment and supplies.
- Ability to provide guidance and instructions.
- Ability to communicate activity objectives, program information and directions.
- Ability to conduct games and activities following established rules, guidelines.
- Ability to retain and use safety rules and department guidelines.
- Ability to evaluate program activities verbally and in writing.
- Ability to plan, organize, motivate, lead, and promote a variety of recreational activities for different age groups with diverse interests and varying skill levels.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Ability to handle requests, inquiries, and complaints in a cooperative and constructive manner.
- Ability to work outdoors and under a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
- Ability to frequently walk and sit when leading various recreational activities.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
