Minimum Qualifications

This position will be filled at one of the following based on qualifications:

Swim Team Coach I ($13.75 per hour):

17 yrs of age or older, plus the following American Red Cross Certifications:

  • Lifeguarding
  • First Aid

Swim Team Coach II ($14.50 per hour):

17 yrs of age or older, plus the following American Red Cross Certifications:

  • Lifeguarding
  • First Aid
  • Water Safety Instructor

Swim Team Coach III ($15.00 per hour):

17 yrs of age or older, plus one (1) season as a swim team coach and the following American Red Cross Certifications:

  • Lifeguarding
  • First Aid
  • Water Safety Instructor.

CERTIFICATIONS in the following:

• Applicants must take and pass Certification Training offered by the Parks and Recreation Department. Certifications include American Red Cross Lifeguarding/CPR/First Aid/AED, Water Safety Instructor R-09. Training information may be obtained during initial interview.
• Must take and pass the Parks and Recreation Department City Skills Test before hire.


Applicants MUST report to the City of Austin Aquatic Office (2818 San Gabriel Dr, Austin, 78705) between the hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday within seven days of submitting your online application.

• All 17 year olds require parent signatures at the time of interview.
• Applicants will be interviewed. If the applicant is offered a conditional job offer based on meeting training requirements, he/she will be required to show proof of citizenship. • Must have reliable transportation.

- Attend mandatory Orientation.
- Attend all area specific mandatory paid in-service meetings.
- Report to work on time for every shift assigned.
- Remain free from being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
- Wear staff uniform only while on duty.
- Work weekends, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
- Be willing to substitute for others.
- Perform general cleaning and maintenance duties while at work.

Preferred Qualifications

The following experience is preferred:

Competitive swimming background
Strong leadership and organizational skills preferred.
Certifications: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

Must take and pass the Parks and Recreation Department Lifeguard City Skills Test before hire.


Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Coaches Neighborhood swim teams
  2. Participates in four tri-meets and one citywide meet
  3. Performs administrative duties
  4. Verbally communicates with both public and staff
  5. Develops, schedules, and conducts activities and events
  6. Promotes and implements programs and/or special events
  7. Coordinates assigned citywide events
  8. Ensures all events and activities conform to appropriate safety and other rules
  9. Ensures that facilities and equipment used for programs or events are properly set up and maintained
  10. Assists in organizing and conducting recreation activities OR
  11. Plans, organizes and leads recreational program activities
  12. Maintains, inventories and cares for City property and equipment
  13. Keeps supervisor informed of materials and supplies necessary to conduct programs
  14. Cleans program areas after completion of activities and at end of work day
  15. Demonstrates cooperative behavior with team, supervisors and the public.
  16. Monitors and records compliance with safety and department guidelines and rules.
  17. Maintains attendance, activity, supply and equipment records
  18. Assists in development of lesson or activity plans and program evaluations
  19. Provides information and directions
  20. Encourages and guides participants
  21. Sets up equipment for scheduled activities/events
  22. Coaches and officiates sports activities when needed

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Ability to work outdoors and under a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to work irregular hours
  • Ability to frequently walk and sit when leading various recreational activities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
