Minimum Qualifications

This position will be filled at one of the following based on qualifications:

Professional Instructor I
$15.00 – $19.00, depending on experience

Any combination equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree, plus six (6) months related experience. Professional Certification may substitute for Bachelor’s Degree.

OR

Professional Instructor II
$20.00 – $35.00, depending on experience

Any combination equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree, plus two (2) years related experience. Professional Certification may substitute for Bachelor’s Degree.

The Professional Instructor is a temporary/seasonal staff position scheduled to work between 20 and 40 hours per week in after school or summer camp Youth Development program setting. Worksites – Various City of Austin Recreation Centers.

• Successful applicants must demonstrate strong leadership, exhibit creative thinking, perform good judgment, and have excellent communication skills.
• Applicants must also possess reliability, trustworthiness, and be safety conscious.

Physical Requirements:

• Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
• Must be physically and mentally able to work with participants adapting to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, hiking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, swimming, stretching and reaching in rugged terrain.
• Tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement.
• Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces.


Driver’s License and Certifications:

• If selected as a finalist, a Texas Class C Driver’s License or have the ability to acquire one by the date of hire will be required.
• Must have CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within thirty (30) days of hire date.

Pay Range

Hours

Variable – up to 40 hours per week

• Programming hours vary at each worksite.
• Monday through Friday between 7:30am-6:30pm
• May be required to work weekends and during special events and programming needs.

Prefer Education and Experience in the following:

• Experience working with youth and adults in recreational programming; and in implementing/teaching recreational classes and activities
• Experience designing, implementing and evaluating outdoor interpretive and/or recreational programming

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities Section –

1. Prepares lesson plans.
2. Plans course content and method of presentation or delivery.
3. Selects and assembles materials, equipment and other instructional aids.
4. Schedules, registers, and conducts classes and workshops.
5. Adapts workshops and classes to student age, physical ability and interests.
6. Provides individual coaching.
7. Ensures safe and proper use of equipment and materials.
8. Selects, stores and inventories equipment and supplies.
9. Safely facilitate and actively supervise participants at all times while engaging in a variety of activities.
10. Regular attendance is essential for this position.
11. Attend all sessions of scheduled staff training.
12. Serve as a role-model, exercising appropriate decision-making boundary setting.
13. Utilize effective behavior management skills, including enforcing policies fairly, consistently, kindly and firmly.
14. Communicate clearly and professionally with, participants, parents, co-workers and supervisor.
15. Work cooperatively with other staff.
16. Provide customer service.
17. Complete reports and forms and assist with maintaining records in accordance with COA and PARD policies.
18. Other duties as assigned.
